Opacity and hiding power
Pigments, which are the component of the coating material that provide the colour, are a major component of the total cost, although how big a fraction of the total product cost they contribute varies.
For this reason, generally more expensive pigments are used as sparingly as possible just to achieve the desired hiding power. The hiding power will always be directly linked to the film application method and the film thickness.
For testing / assessing a coating material a defined method of application is always a vital pre-condition. Only if this is established will it be possible to compare test documents and, where applicable, communicate the necessary quality related properties to meet specific requirements.
To meet different application requirements a wide variety of methods and processes are available.
