Simulation of stoving processes with the gradient oven — Pulversymposium 2023

With the newly developed gradient oven, stoving processes can be simulated under controlled ambient conditions in a cost- and time-efficient manner.

"Gradient oven - baking behaviour of powder coatings"
(L. Wahlers - Pulversymposium 26 - 27 January 2023)

When optimising and developing new powder coatings and powder coating systems, the curing process is key. The heating time, the baking temperature and the baking duration influence the curing process and thus the quality of the resulting coating. The precise control of the temperature curve can also be used to vary the surface structure of the coating.

A gradient oven was developed to simulate the curing process outside a large-format continuous dryer or chamber dryer. This enables the controlled heating of a coated sample by 45 individually controllable heating elements. The heating elements can assume different temperatures relative to each other and can be controlled with different temperature curves over time. In addition to simulating the curing process of powder coatings, the influence of aggressive media on the powder coating surface can also be investigated at different temperatures.
