In the field of coating technology the concept of hardness generally refers to scratch resistance. To call this hardness is not perhaps quite correct use of language but it has historically been used in this way and is well established. Fundamentally it concerns the properties of the coating material to withstand moved mechanical influences so as to leave no trace or evidence on the coating.

The pencil method belongs to the group of scratch hardness testing instruments. This is a simple and quick method for testing the surface hardness of coatings with regard to stresses inflicted by scratching with sharp edges, or other rough surfaces. It can also be applied during production, e. g. for coil coatings.

All test methods applicable for this instrument are in principle based on the same test procedure: The specimen is clamped on a turntable. The test tool is fixed on a load arm also equipped with an adjustable weight so that the pressure exerted onto the specimen material can be regulated. The resistance of the specimen against this action is visually evaluated from the score mark.

The LINEARTESTER 249 is a tabletop unit. The electromotive drive ensures a uniform forward motion of the slide. The test tool is lowered and lifted automatically when scratch/scribe tests are carried out. A multitude of different test tools are available. The tools marked with (*) are made of Tungsten Carbide Steel, additionally covered with an extremely hard layer. Due to this layer’s "golden" appearance, any worn parts are visually very easy recognizable because the Tungsten Carbide Material under the "golden" layer has a distincly different color. With the optional available universal adapter set even also several user-specifc tool inserts can be used.
