Jan-Luca Schneider wins 2022 Budde Award

The Budde Foundation honours our employee Jan-Luca Schneider, graduate of the University of Applied Sciences Südwestfalen Iserlohn.
Jan-Luca Schneider has received the Budde Award 2022 for his outstanding thesis on the topic "Development of an automatic method for crack detection during the Erichsen cupping test on sheet metals and foils with a thickness of less than 0.1mm.".

Customers are facing the challenge of testing thinner and thinner sheet metals on formability. During the corresponding cupping test, it is difficult to determine when the crack occurs. In his thesis, Jan-Luca Schneider therefore developed a universally applicable, user-independent and automated test method. Light is emitted from the tool, passing through the crack in the sheet metal, so that the camera sensor in conjunction with the evaluation unit can detect the time of the crack and thus determine the limit of the stretch-forming capacity. For this innovative new development, the graduate of the bachelor's degree programme in mechatronics at the University of Applied Sciences Südwestfalen Iserlohn received the Budde Award. The work was supervised by Dr Daniel Staupendahl and Prof Dr Michael Marré.

We warmly congratulate the winners on receiving the Budde Award 2022.

The Budde Foundation honours three graduates of the University of Applied Sciences South Westphalia with the 2022 Budde Award. The award is endowed with 5,000 euros each and this year recognises outstanding final theses from the degree programmes in business engineering, mechanical engineering and mechatronics.

We thank Jan-Luca Schneider for his excellent work. We would also like to thank Dr Daniel Staupendahl, Head of Research & Development at ERICHSEN, and Prof Dr Michael Marré, Professor of Production Engineering: Focus on Forming Technology at the University of Applied Sciences South Westphalia Iserlohn, for supervising the thesis.

Background of the Budde Award:

The Budde Award is presented once a year to graduates of the University of Applied Sciences South Westphalia who have distinguished themselves through outstanding achievements in their final thesis in engineering. The work should be characterised by exceptionally innovative ideas and show a high degree of creativity.

After successfully completing his mechanical engineering studies at the State School of Engineering in Hagen, a predecessor institution of the University of Applied Sciences South Westphalia, Dipl.-Ing. Dirk Budde founded the company ALMATEC Maschinenbau GmbH and developed it into a successful enterprise together with his wife Ursula Budde.

In gratitude for the good education and for the purpose of motivating young students, the Budde family has established the Budde Foundation. The purpose of the foundation is to promote science and research and to support vocational training.
